Actually, the cemetery viewing area is now blocked with posts with "no
trespassing" signs. Instead, go just to the west of the cemetery to county
park land, where you can walk down to several places where you can view the
lake. Let me give a little better directions to this location. From Hwy
52 (going south), exit at the Hwy 50 (to Red Wing) & Hwy 56 (to Randolph).
Take Hwy 56 south towards Randolph. Turn left (east) at CR88 (292nd St).
Take the first possible right turn, which is a short driveway crossing the
railroad and ending at a gate. Park here. I believe there is a sign
identifying this as Dakota County park land. There is extensive sand and
mud flats visible, which is attracting all kinds of waterfowl and should
soon attract shorebirds. There were several thousand waterfowl visible
today, but most were not close enough to ID even with a scope.

You can also view the lake from the south side. Go back and continue south
on Hwy 56 across the Cannon River to the second left (Scotia Trail) and
follow the signs to the boat launch. The lake is also visible from the
Lake Byllesby Regional Park on the east end of the lake, but besides
occasional waterfowl, it is not as interesting as shallower west end of the
lake, which was described above.

If you are visiting the lake, don't miss checking out the Great Western
Industrial Park north of Randolph. Turn west off of Hwy 56th at 284th St.
This is a great location to find grassland birds.
