[Mnbird] Coopers Hawks-Columbia Hts.

I suspect that, like Kestrels, Cooper's hawks may foul the nest too much for repeat use. There was a nest about 300 feet from my house last year, and the birds were very visible, all the time. This year, nothing, though I do see one occasionally in the neighborhood. Kestrels have nested in past years in some of my wood duck boxes. The clean up of all the excrement they deposited on the walls was a chore. We tried though. But rarely was the same box used in consecutive years.

Lois,

Or a more well-organized group of blue jay protestors :>) It’s a possibility.
The hawks move around a bit. The young ones become much quieter once they have fledged after being noisy in the nest.
I watched them nest in New Richland, Waseca County. The next year, someone two blocks away reported accipiters nesting. I can’t be sure they are same hawks, but it’d be an easy move without involving Mayflower or U-Haul.

Al,

You are saying that possibly an increase in Blue Jays limited the nesting of Coopers?

Thanks!

Lois,
A study done at Southern Illinois University (Rachel M. Ehrlich and Lee M. Drickamer, 1993) found that Cooper’s Hawks rarely reused a nest, but frequently nested in the same tree stand for several years. An interesting finding in this study was that the constant harassment of the hawks by Blue Jays limited the nesting choices of the accipiters. Mobbing rules!

Question? I have lived here for almost 18 years and each year there is a family of Coopers Hawks. They usually are year round with young ones in the Spring/Summer. They are very vocal and I did locate the nest in a yard a few houses down. This year, I have not heard or seen a Coppers Hawk. Any ideas as to why? I can't see through the trees if the nest is still there. I sure miss them as it was a pleasure to watch them train their young.
