I just watched a Chickadee eye a pile of unshelled peanuts set out for the Jays. After looking at them all… It picked the biggest one and attempted to fly off with it. After leaving the deck rail the Chickedee appeared to lose forward air speed and altitude as it flew off :) that peanut was as big as the little bird.

Last year a chickadee found an unshelled peanut and sat on the deck floor attempting to crack it. It grasped the peanut with both feet balancing with its tail and three times the little bird tipped over on its side on the deck floor having to climb back up on the peanut too begin the process all over again. How could I not laugh out loud.

I am freshly retired and looking forward to many excursions out on the trail with my binoculars and notepad.
