They may have been here, before I noticed them, but this is the first I
have seen them beneath our feeders. Two, for sure, ruddy, streaked, and
even appearing rather plump next to the tree sparrows, they
industriously two legged back-kick up leaf litter in their search for the
choicest seeds. Fun to watch. They use so much energy, searching for those
little morsels! The chickadees who flit about and pick a seed and then take
it away to open it and then flit back for another are placid by comparison.
The woods and marsh are becoming full of bird call and song.
Last night it was the trumpeters on the creek, bugling their displeasure
with the geese who so rudely and noisily were crowding their chosen area.
The trumpeters are louder than the geese, but the geese out number them and
set up a constant noise, much like a noisy pub or bar hosting two opposing
sports teams who have had a few too many and so there are little
kerfluffles here and there, shoving matches and shouts of alarm going up
around them. Just like that in the little pond adjacent to the creek. The
poor wood ducks and mallards were crowded out entirely.
