Writing from Northern Peru... the Schulenberg, Parker et. al. Birds of Peru from Princeton Press is the definitive field guide. I'm also using the app version from Birds in the Hand on my iPad, which is fabulous: easy to carry and search, and in addition has almost all the voices. (The only downside is it's hard to compare different species, but you can have a book for seeing related birds on a page.)
