Subject: Wondering if the folks on mnbird will be interested in a White Pelican in St Paul

I'm not on mnbird, but am aware of your listserv - we had a varied thrush for part of a winter several years ago and lots of people came to visit, lol.

I've been observing a lone American White Pelican on the Mississippi near downtown Saint Paul, on and off for most of the past month.  It has an injured left wing and cannot fly, but does seem to be feeding successfully and is swimming strongly.  I've been working on organizing a rescue attempt and have a rehabber and raptor center volunteer (who has done pelican rescues before) and a u of m researcher who are willing to help with capture and transport to Wildlife Rehab which has agreed to take the bird if we can successfully capture it.  We can't really attempt a rescue without a boat, so any help that other bird lovers could provide on that front would be most welcome.  I spoke with a DNR manager last week who said they would help if we provided the volunteers but this morning the area supervisor declined, so that angle has been exhausted.

If folks just want to go see the bird, it is commonly visible from either of two vantage points:  along Randolph Avenue in front of the Xcel plant - on the way to the High Bridge Dog Park, for those who have four-legged friends and know that park.  There is a backwater on the river right in front of Xcel and the pelican spends a lot of time in this area.  When it moves out of this area, it typically can be seen from the walking path in Lilydale Regional Park on the other side of the river - access off of Sibley Mem Hwy just east of 35E.

It is a beautiful bird!  I thought other birders might be interested in getting a view also.  We will keep working on a rescue and anyone who would like to help may contact me by email at suzegappa at gmail.com or on my mobile at 651-334-0236.

Thanks much,

Suzanne Gappa
