I will be leading a MRVAC field trip on this Sunday (May 7th) looking for
prairie birds in Dakota County. Most people don't realize that the
original settlers found much of central Dakota County was long grass
prairie. While the original prairie has virtually all succumbed to the
plow, there are still good places to find prairie birds. Target birds
include Swainson's Hawk, Orchard Oriole, both Meadowlarks, Bobolink, Sedge
Wren, Dickcissel, Brewer's Blackbird, Grasshopper, Savannah, and Vesper
Sparrow. We will meet at Schaar's Bluff at 7 am at the picnic area (not
the "Gathering Center"), check out the picnic area and the woods, then hit
the road and drive out to some of the best birding areas in Dakota County.
The field trip is free, mostly driving, and open to all. No reservations
are needed. If you bring a lunch, you can continue with us into the
afternoon.

Directions are: Head out of the Twin Cities on Highway 52 and take Highway
55 towards Hastings. Turn LEFT on CR42 (east) and then left on Idell
Avenue. Look for signs to Schaar's Bluff unit of Spring Lake Park. In the
park take the first right turn to the picnic area. The gathering center
address is 8395 E. 127th St., Hastings. If you get to that parking lot,
look for the birders gathering at the other parking lot. If you drive into
Hastings, you have gone too far.
