[Mnbird] mallard question

 There is a drainage pond that isn't frozen just south of the Dupont dog park in SW Mpls.  There were about 50 mallards in this pond, but, oddly, at least 4 times as many males as females.  And possibly some were juvenile males who didn't have the male plumage. Why would there be such disparity in sexes?  Do females tend to migrate more?
